Chapter 01 · SEO explained simply

What is SEO? Think of Google as the biggest market on earth

Forget the jargon for a minute. If you have ever owned a shop, or even walked through a busy market, you already understand search engine optimization.

Picture the busiest market you know. Balogun in Lagos. Oxford Street in London. A packed mall in Houston on a Saturday.

The shops at the front gate get seen by everyone who walks in. The shop hidden at the back can sell the best product in the whole market and still go home hungry.

Google is that market. It never closes and it serves the whole world. People walk in by typing exactly what they want: “dentist open on Saturday near me”, “accountant for small business in London”, “buy land in Lekki with C of O”.

Search engine optimization is the work of moving your shop to the front gate. Not by paying rent on every visitor, but by becoming the shop Google trusts most to answer that exact question.

That is also why SEO marketing is different from every other channel. Ads, posts and emails push your message at people. SEO puts you in front of people who are already looking. That is the real job of search engine optimization in digital marketing: being there at the exact moment someone wants what you sell.

A true story from Ibadan

A few years ago I was working with clients in the UK and the USA from Ibadan. By the time Ibadan was winding down for the night, my working day was just getting started, and every coworking space I tried closed at 5pm, or 6pm if I was lucky.

One evening I typed “24/7 workspace near me” into Google. One result stood out: Seb’s Hub. I called the number on the listing, the CEO, Mr Francis, answered, and the following week I paid ₦40,000 for a month of 24/7 access. I stayed for a long time.

Nobody advertised to me. No billboard on Mokola Hill, no radio spot, no Instagram ad. I had the need, the budget and the intention before I touched a keyboard, and a free Google Business Profile put Seb’s Hub in front of me at that exact moment. That is ₦40,000 a month, repeatedly, plus every person I have told since. Including you, right now. That is SEO: being findable at the exact moment somebody with money in their hand is looking for what you sell.

The plain definition

Search engine optimization (SEO) is everything you do to make your website the most useful, most trusted answer to the questions your customers type into search engines, so you show up when they search, without paying for every click.

The 4 jobs every SEO system must do

Found, understood, trusted, chosen. In that order, because each one depends on the one before it.

Job one

Be found

Appear when the right person searches. If Google cannot reach and read your website, nothing else you do matters.

Technical SEO
Job two

Be understood

Make it obvious what you sell, who it is for and where. Search engines are very literal readers.

On-page SEO
Job three

Be trusted

Give Google and people enough evidence to believe you: reviews, links, real names and real results.

Authority
Job four

Be chosen

Turn the ranking into the click, then the call, the booking or the sale. That is the whole point, and it is where conversion rate optimization and a proper sales funnel take over.

Conversion

SEO is not about getting everyone to your website. It is about getting the right people to find it, and getting them to act when they arrive.

Google puts it more formally in its own SEO Starter Guide: SEO is about helping search engines understand your content, and helping people find your site and decide to visit it. What happens after they arrive is conversion rate optimization.

Chapter 02 · Google results, decoded

Anatomy of a Google results page, and where SEO fits on it

Search for almost anything that costs money and you will see the same building blocks. Some you pay for. Most you earn. Tap a number to see which is which.

accountant for small business in london
AI Overview

Count them. One block is bought. Five are earned. That is the simplest argument for search engine optimization you will ever hear.

The map pack is local SEO. The AI answers are AI SEO. The video row is YouTube marketing. All of it starts with the same foundations on this page.

Chapter 03 · Show me the money

What is SEO actually worth? Let’s put a number on it.

Ranking matters because clicks are not shared equally. The top result takes the lion’s share. The tenth gets crumbs. Here are the 2026 numbers.

Share of searchers who click each Google position (#1 is the top result)
22.6%
10.2%
5.8%
0.5%
#1#2#3#10
Click-through rates from First Page Sage, September 2026. Advanced Web Ranking sees the same pattern on phones: 35.95% for position one without an AI answer, 8.51% with one. Click rates vary by search type, device and page layout, so treat these as planning numbers, not promises.

Position one gets about 45 times the clicks of position ten on searches without an AI answer.

When Google shows an AI answer, everybody gets fewer clicks. Position one still beats position ten 36 to 1.

Page two is where websites go to be forgotten. Hardly anyone scrolls that far, so “we are on page two” earns you almost nothing.

The answer to AI is not to quit SEO. It is to become a source the AI quotes. Brands cited inside Google’s AI Overview get about 35% more organic clicks.

Put in rough numbers for your business. It estimates what ranking could be worth in sales, and what the same visitors would cost on Google Ads. Amounts are in US dollars. SEO is not free either: you pay for strategy, content, technical work and time. The difference is that a ranking keeps working after the work is done.

Chapter 04 · Myth buster

Is SEO dead because of AI? Here is what the 2026 data says.

Every few years someone announces the death of search engine optimization in digital marketing. In 2026 it is AI’s turn. So we went to the numbers instead of the headlines.

Myth 03Half true

“AI answers steal all the clicks.”

In Pew Research’s study, people clicked a result 8% of the time with an AI summary, against 15% without. Ahrefs found the top result’s click rate falls about 58% on those searches.

But brands cited inside the summary win more clicks. The job now is to be the source.

Clicked a result, no AI summary15%
Clicked a result, with AI summary8%
Myth 04Half true

“Zero-click searches make SEO worthless.”

In SparkToro’s 2026 US data, 68% of Google searches ended without a click to another website.

But no click is not no value. People still see your name, call you straight from the map and search for you again later. Nobody books a lawyer or buys land without clicking.

Myth 05False

“AI visitors don’t matter yet.”

They are few, but they are hot. Semrush reported that AI search visitors were worth 4.4 times a normal organic visitor in its analysis.

At Ahrefs, AI search brought 0.5% of visits but 12.1% of signups. The same work that wins Google wins these visitors too.

Myth 06True, but

“SEO is slow, so just run ads.”

Yes, SEO takes months and ads work today. But LocaliQ puts the average Google Ads click at $5.42, and every click is rented.

SEO is not free traffic. It is an asset you build. The smartest businesses run Google Ads and SEO together.

The verdict: SEO is not dead. Lazy SEO is dead.

Thin pages written for robots. Dead.
Stuffing the same keyword into every sentence. Dead.
Buying hundreds of links from strangers. Dead.
Being the most useful, most trusted answer wherever your customer searches. More valuable than ever. Google says its own AI Mode passed 1 billion monthly users, and it still quotes and links to websites.
Chapter 05 · The new meaning of SEO

SEO is becoming Search Everywhere Optimization

Your customer no longer searches in one place. They see you on TikTok, ask ChatGPT, check Google Maps, read your reviews and then visit your website before they pay. Modern search engine optimization in digital marketing makes sure you win every one of those stops.

Where your customers search

Over 50 billion searches happen every day. Google gets about 13.7 billion.

That is roughly 27%, by NP Digital’s estimate. Your next customer is more likely to discover you outside Google than on it: on Instagram, YouTube, Amazon, LinkedIn, Reddit, and inside AI tools like ChatGPT.

That is why SEO now means Search Everywhere Optimization. Google is still the biggest single search box. It is just no longer the only one. You need one connected strategy across AI search, social media and YouTube, with your website at the centre.

One customer, many search boxes. Google, Maps, TikTok, YouTube, ChatGPT and reviews, all before the first message.

Most people will not send ₦2 million or $2,000 to a stranger because of one video. They search, they check, and they land on your website. That website has to be found, and it has to win.

Chapter 06 · How Google decides

How does Google decide who ranks first?

Google’s job is to show the best answer as fast as possible. To do that, it does four things to every page on the internet. Good Google search optimization makes each of them easy.

1Step 1

Crawl

Google’s robot, Googlebot, follows links to discover pages. Think of a librarian walking every aisle of the biggest library on earth.

What wins it: A sitemap, internal links and no broken pages.
2Step 2

Index

Google reads each page and files it. If it cannot understand what a page is about, it does not file it, and an unfiled page cannot rank.

What wins it: Clear titles, headings and structured data.
3Step 3

Rank

When someone searches, Google sorts the filed pages by relevance, quality and trust, using hundreds of signals, in a fraction of a second.

What wins it: The best answer, the most proof, the most trust.
4Step 4

Serve

Google shows the answer in the best format for that search: a blue link, a map, a video, a product or an AI summary.

What wins it: Content shaped for every format you can win.

The four letters behind every ranking: E-E-A-T

Google publishes a long handbook for the people who rate the quality of its search results, the Search Quality Rater Guidelines. One idea runs through all of it: Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trust.

Google is blunt about which one matters most. In its guide to helpful, reliable, people-first content, it says: “trust is most important.”

In plain English: Google ranks the business it would be least embarrassed to recommend.

EExperience

Have you actually done it? Real photos, real cases and first-hand detail that only a doer would know.

EExpertise

Do you know the subject deeply? Credentials, depth and accuracy that hold up to an expert.

AAuthoritativeness

Do others vouch for you? Links, mentions, awards and reviews from people who are not you.

TTrust

Are you honest, accurate and safe? Real names, contact details, a secure site and claims you can prove.

Chapter 07 · The four kinds of SEO

On-page, technical, backlinks and local SEO, in simple English

Every part of search engine optimization in digital marketing, and every SEO service you will ever buy, is one of these four, or a mix of them. Here is what each one means, with a business example you can picture.

On-page SEO: say clearly what you sell, who it is for and where

On page SEO is everything on the page itself. The title Google shows, the headings, the words, the images and the links between your pages.

It is the cheapest SEO there is, because you already own the page. You just have to make it speak clearly.

Picture this. A Lagos law firm’s homepage title says “Welcome to Excellence”. Google has no idea what that means. Change it to “Property Lawyers in Lagos | Land, C of O & Tenancy” and the page finally matches what clients type.

We write pages like this every week through our SEO writing services.

What we check
One clear topic and one main keyword per page
A title under about 60 characters, keyword near the front
Headings that read like a table of contents
The answer in the first paragraph
Descriptive image names and alt text
Links to your related pages

Technical SEO: make your website easy to reach, read and load

Technical SEO is the plumbing. Speed, mobile layout, security, sitemaps and the code Google reads behind the scenes. Most website SEO optimization problems are invisible until someone looks under the hood.

Speed is money. In a study commissioned by Google, a mobile site just 0.1 seconds faster lifted retail conversions by 8.4% (Deloitte, 2019 data). And in Nigeria, 75.22% of web traffic is on a phone.

Picture this. A Houston clinic’s booking page takes eight seconds to appear on a phone. Patients leave before the form loads. Compressing the images and removing two unused plugins brings it under three seconds, and the form finally gets filled.

If your website is the problem, our web development team does SEO web design: fast, mobile first, with web SEO optimization built in from day one.

What we check
Secure https with the padlock
Loads in under about 3 seconds on mobile data
Works perfectly on small phones
XML sitemap submitted in Google Search Console
No broken links or dead pages
Structured data (schema) on key pages

Local SEO: win the map when people search near you

Local SEO gets you into the map pack and the “near me” results. It runs on your Google Business Profile, your reviews and your location pages.

Reviews carry enormous weight here: 68% of consumers will only use a local business rated four stars or more.

Remember Seb’s Hub from chapter one? That was local SEO. A complete Google Business Profile, the right category, “open 24 hours” and a phone that gets answered.

Want the map pack? See our local SEO service.

What we check
Google Business Profile claimed and verified
Same name, address and phone everywhere
Categories, services and hours filled in
Fresh photos added every month
Reviews asked for and answered
A page for each area you serve

And the new fifth kind: AI SEO. Structuring your pages, proof and brand mentions so ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI answers understand you, trust you and quote you.

Chapter 08 · Keywords and search intent

Keywords are simply your customer’s own words

A keyword is just what someone types. The skill is knowing what they actually want when they type it. That is called search intent, and getting it wrong is the most expensive mistake in SEO.

Intent 1

Learn

They want an answer.

what is a c of ohow much is a dental implant ukhow to start an llc in texas

Best page: a clear guide or blog post

Intent 2

Go

They want a specific brand or place.

Best page: your homepage, contact or location page

Intent 3

Compare

They are choosing between options.

Best page: comparisons, case studies and reviews

Intent 4

Buy

They are ready to pay.

emergency plumber croydonbook dentist ikeja saturdaycar accident lawyer houston

Best page: a service or product page with one clear next step

How we do SEO keyword analysis

Most people chase the biggest keyword. We start with the money. Every keyword gets scored on four things before it earns a page:

VolumeHow many people search it each month.
IntentLearn, go, compare or buy.
DifficultyHow hard the current top results are to beat.
ValueWhat one customer from it is worth to you.

Here is what most keyword tools will not tell you: a keyword with 50,000 searches that never buys is worth less than one with 300 searches that does.

Buy and compare keywords come first. They are smaller, but they pay the bills. Learn keywords come next, and build the trust that makes the buying pages rank.

Example: keyword priorities for a London accounting firm

Six rules for SEO writing that works in 2026

Answer first

Put the answer in the first two lines, then explain. Readers and Google both reward it.

Show you have done it

First-hand photos, numbers and stories. Nobody can copy your experience, and AI cannot fake it.

One page, one job

One topic and one main keyword per page, so your own pages never compete with each other.

Write like you talk

Short sentences. Plain words. Your customer is reading on a phone in traffic, not at a desk.

Prove every claim

Link to the source of your numbers. Trust is the part of E-E-A-T that Google says matters most.

Update, don’t abandon

Refresh your key pages every few months. Outdated pages quietly slide down the results.

Can you use AI to write SEO content? Google’s guidance on AI-generated content is clear: it rewards helpful content however it is made, and treats content made mainly to game rankings as spam. The ABC businesses are made-up examples. Need pages written properly? See our SEO writing services.

The same pattern, all over the world

Two famous examples of businesses built on search.

500K+monthly visits from search

Backlinko: from a one-man blog to a Semrush acquisition

Brian Dean built Backlinko by publishing a small number of very deep SEO guides and earning links to them. By December 2021 it pulled 500,000+ non-paid visits a month, and in January 2022 Semrush bought it. A blog, built on search engine optimization, became a company someone wanted to buy.

16%of organic traffic from one page type

Zapier: one page for every question people ask

Zapier built a page for almost every pair of apps people want to connect. Those integration pages bring about 16% of its organic traffic, and its blog brings 67.5%. Every page answers one exact search, and the pages add up to an empire.

SEO looks different when your customers are African

In Africa, buyers search on Google, then check Google Maps, Jumia and Jiji, Instagram, TikTok, community forums and WhatsApp groups, and more and more often an AI chat. African companies rarely publish SEO case studies, so we read the public traffic estimates for the continent’s busiest websites instead. Look where search sits.

Chapter 11 · SEO or paid ads?

SEO vs paid ads: rent the traffic, or own it?

Search engine marketing covers both: paying Google for clicks, and earning them with search engine optimization. Here is the honest comparison, and where search engine optimization in digital marketing wins.

COMPAREPaid search ads (SEM)Search engine optimization (SEO)

You can invest for a few months first

Choose ads when

You need enquiries this month

Your margins can pay for every click
You want to test offers and keywords fast
You are launching something new

Choose both when

You want speed now and compounding later
Ads tell you which keywords convert

You want to own the top of the page twice
Ads rent attention. SEO builds an asset.

SEO is not free traffic. You pay for strategy, content, technical work, authority and time. But unlike an ad click, a ranking can keep sending qualified visitors long after the work is done.

That is per click. Not per customer.

Most clicks never buy. Across industries, the average cost to get a single lead from Google Ads is $66.69. Every month, forever, for as long as you want the leads to keep coming.

Our honest advice: use ads to make money this month and to learn which keywords actually convert. Use SEO to own those keywords for the next ten years. That is the role of search engine optimization in digital marketing: the channel that keeps paying after the ad budget stops.

We run both. See our Google Ads and paid advertising services.

The 5 levels of search visibility

Your readiness score places you on one of these levels. Most businesses we audit start at level one or two.

Level 1 · 0 to 30Invisible

Customers cannot find you on Google yet, even when they search for exactly what you sell.

Level 2 · 31 to 55Findable

Some pages rank, but there is no real structure, and enquiries from search are rare.

Level 3 · 56 to 75Competitive

Technical health, content and trust are working together. You win some money searches.

Level 4 · 76 to 90Dominant

You own the main buying searches in your market, and search brings steady customers.

Level 5 · 91 to 100Everywhere

Found on Google, Maps, YouTube, AI answers, social search and marketplaces.

Honest limits

What SEO cannot do, and who should not hire us

Search engine optimization is powerful. It is not magic. You deserve to hear the limits before you spend a single naira, pound or dollar.

SEO cannot

Fix a product people do not want
Make an uncompetitive price competitive
Create demand where nobody is searching
Guarantee a #1 position on Google
Build authority overnight
Replace a website that loses visitors
Replace good customer service

That is why our SEO work does not stop at rankings. We care about what happens after the click, which is where conversion rate optimization comes in.

SEO is probably not right for you if

You need customers tomorrow, not in a few months
You cannot invest for several months before judging it
Your offer is not commercially viable yet
You want a guaranteed #1 ranking
You only care about traffic, not customers
You do not want to change anything on your website

If that is you, paid advertising may be the better place to start. We will tell you honestly if it is.

For larger search programmes

SEO for complex websites: treat search as an asset, not a campaign

If you run marketing for a bank, a school group, a hospital network, a real estate developer or a brand selling in several countries, search engine optimization in digital marketing is infrastructure. SEO for companies at that scale is about systems, not tricks. In HubSpot’s 2026 survey, B2B marketers ranked their website, blog and SEO as the number one channel for return on investment.

A marketing leadership team reviewing organic search revenue across several countries
Report revenue, not rankings. Search Console, analytics and your CRM joined up, so leadership sees customers and money.

Price organic traffic like an asset

We value your organic traffic at what it would cost to replace on Google Ads. Then the board can see SEO as an asset that grows, not a cost that repeats.

One brand, many countries

Country pages, hreflang and currency for Nigeria, the UK, the USA and beyond, without your own pages competing against each other.

Thousands of pages, one standard

Templates, schema and internal linking rules that scale across every product, branch, course or location.

Migrations without the crash

Redesigns and platform moves are where companies lose years of rankings overnight. We map every URL before anything moves.

Governance across teams

Clear rules so product, content, PR and developers stop quietly undoing each other’s SEO work.

Reporting in revenue

Search Console, analytics and your CRM joined up, so you report customers and revenue to leadership, not just rankings.

Questions people ask

Search engine optimization: your questions, answered

What is search engine optimization in digital marketing?

SEO is the part of digital marketing that brings you customers from search engines without paying for each click. Ads, social media and email push your message out to people. SEO puts you in front of people who are already searching for what you sell. SEO and digital marketing work best together: ads and social create interest, and search catches people the moment they are ready.

Is SEO the same as search engine marketing (SEM)?

Not quite. Search engine marketing is the umbrella that covers paid search ads and SEO together. In everyday use, SEM usually means paid ads such as Google Ads, while SEO means earning the free results. The strongest businesses use both: ads for speed, SEO for the long term.

How long does SEO take to work?

Quick technical fixes can show within weeks. Real ranking growth usually takes a few months, and the biggest gains come after that as your pages build trust and compound. Google itself says some changes take effect in a few hours and others could take several months.

How much do SEO services cost?

It depends on how competitive your market is and how much needs fixing. An SEO optimization service for a local clinic needs far less than one for a company selling in five countries. Our SEO packages start at ₦950,000 a month, about $715 or £540, and every package and price is on our SEO services page. We start with a free SEO audit so you only pay for what your website needs. Full growth programmes that combine SEO with ads and funnels are on the pricing page.

Can you guarantee a #1 ranking on Google?

No, and nobody honest can. Google says so itself. What we commit to is the work, full transparency, and one agreed business number that we report on, such as enquiries or sales from search.

Do I still need SEO if I already run ads?

Yes, for two reasons. Ads stop the day you stop paying, and LocaliQ puts the average Google Ads click at $5.42 in the US. SEO is not free, but it slowly lowers what each customer costs you. Your ads also show which keywords convert, which makes your SEO sharper.

Is SEO dead because of ChatGPT and AI?

No. In Ahrefs’ study of 76,000 websites, Google sent about 190 times more traffic than ChatGPT, and one Similarweb study found 95% of ChatGPT users also use Google. What has changed is that you now need to be found everywhere people search, including inside AI answers. SEO is becoming Search Everywhere Optimization.

What is on-page SEO?

On page SEO is everything on the page itself: the title, headings, words, images and links between your pages. It tells Google clearly what each page is about, who it is for and where. It is the cheapest SEO there is, because you already own the page.

What are backlinks, and do I need them?

A backlink is a link from another website to yours. Google treats good ones as votes of confidence, so yes, they still matter. One link from a respected publication beats hundreds of cheap ones, and buying links in bulk can get you penalised.

Is it search engine optimisation or optimization?

Both are right. Search engine optimisation is the British spelling and search engine optimization is the American one. Google treats them as the same search, and so do we. In the UK you will often hear it called SEO optimisation or website search engine optimisation. It is all the same work.

Which SEO tools do you use?

Google Search Console and Google Analytics first, because they show what Google actually sees. Then Ahrefs and Semrush for keywords and competitors, PageSpeed Insights for speed, and free checkers such as SEOSiteCheckup for quick scans. SEO tools find problems. People fix them. If you want the numbers set up properly first, our analytics and tracking service does exactly that.

Do you work with businesses outside Nigeria?

Yes. We work with businesses in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and the Netherlands, as well as across Nigeria and Africa, and with many Africans in the diaspora. If you are in the UK looking for a search engine optimisation service, or comparing search engine optimisation companies, the same team and method apply. Most of the work is remote.

Can I learn SEO myself?

Yes, and many business owners should learn the basics. Our Search Engine Optimization For Beginners course takes 12 weeks, covers AI search, and ends with a certificate. If you would rather spend your time running the business, we can do it for you.

What does an SEO specialist actually do?

An SEO specialist researches what your customers search for, fixes the technical problems that stop Google reading your website, improves your pages and content, earns links and reviews, and tracks what brings in enquiries. On a good team, each of those is handled by someone who specialises in it.

One last thing

Somebody is searching for what you sell right now. Make sure they find you.

Send us your website on WhatsApp. We’ll show you where you’re losing search visibility, what to fix first, and which opportunities are worth pursuing.

No generic reports. No 50-page PDFs full of problems nobody fixes. You will get the opportunities that matter, ranked by business value. And the audit is yours, whether you work with us or not.
