Most businesses don’t have a customer problem. They have a LEAD problem.
You know your product or service can help people. You post on social media, talk to people, and maybe you’ve paid for ads.
A few people ask questions. Someone asks for a price. Another says, “I’ll get back to you.”
Then it goes quiet.
So you post more, boost another post or try a new platform, and hope something sticks.
Here’s the hard truth I share with every new client: you can be doing a lot of marketing and still not have a marketing SYSTEM.
Random activity gets random results.
Sometimes the problem really is that not enough people know you exist. But often, people are finding you, and the leads are leaking somewhere else: a weak offer, a slow reply or no follow-up at all.
From the outside, those problems all look the same: not enough sales. But each one needs a different fix.
That’s why this guide won’t just tell you to “run Facebook ads.” It shows you how to get leads for your business that actually become customers, and how to find exactly where your leads are getting lost.
You’ll get 15 proven lead generation strategies with costs, timelines and step-by-step actions, from free to paid.
Then you’ll see how to get leads in real estate, how to generate leads in sales, how to generate leads for IT sales, and playbooks for 11 more industries.
Plus word-for-word templates, a follow-up schedule, the rules in the US, UK, EU, Canada and Nigeria, 3 free tools and a 30-day plan.
Whether you run a roofing company in Dallas, a clinic in London, an agency in Lagos or a software firm in Toronto, the goal is the same:
Build a reliable path from “I might need this” to “Let’s talk.”
To get leads for your business, make a clear offer to a specific customer, show up where that customer is already looking, make it easy to contact you, and follow up fast.
The 15 best ways to get leads are Google Business Profile, SEO content, Google Search Ads, Google Local Services Ads, Facebook and Instagram lead ads, LinkedIn, lead magnets, email and text follow-up, referrals, partnerships, cold email, cold calling, events and webinars, short videos, and directories.
Pick 2 or 3 that fit your business, reply to every new lead within minutes, and track what each new customer costs you, not just each lead.

What Is A Lead? And What Makes A Quality Lead?
A lead is a person or business that has shown interest in what you sell and given you a way to contact them.
A name on a list you bought is not a lead yet. A homeowner who fills in your quote form is.
Before you learn how to get leads, know the three ways they reach you.
You’ll also hear two sales terms.
A marketing qualified lead (MQL) has shown interest, such as downloading a guide. A sales qualified lead (SQL) is ready for a sales conversation, such as someone who asked for a quote.
Now the part most guides skip. Not every lead is worth chasing.
A quality lead passes four simple tests:
Fifty leads that pass all four beat 500 that pass none. Every strategy below is built for quality first, and you’ll learn how to score your leads later in this guide.
The 5-Part Lead System Behind Every Strategy
Here is why most businesses struggle with how to get leads. They jump straight to tactics.
They run an ad before they know who it’s for. They post on social media with no offer. They get inquiries and reply two days later.
Every strategy in this guide works far better when these five parts are in place first.

If that sounds like a lot, it isn’t. A small business can set up all five in a week, and it works the same way in New York, Manchester, Lagos or Sydney.
And if you’d rather have it built for you, that’s exactly what our lead generation services do.
How To Get Leads Fast: Your 48-Hour Plan
Need inquiries this week, not in six months? Start with the people and tools you already have.
That’s how to get leads quickly without wasting money. The rest of this guide shows you how to build a steady flow.
Where Leads Get Lost (And How To Find Your Leak)
Before you work out how to get more leads, check where you’re losing the ones you already get. Every lead passes through five stages, and most businesses leak at one of them.
| Stage | What goes wrong | What to measure | First fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Discovery | Not enough of the right people see you | Profile views, search visits, replies to outreach | Pick a better channel |
| 2. Interest | People see you but don’t feel a reason to act | Visits that turn into inquiries | A sharper offer and landing page |
| 3. Inquiry | The form, call or chat is slow or hard | Started vs finished inquiries, missed calls | One simple form, a call button and fast replies |
| 4. Qualification | The leads aren’t a good fit | Share of leads that are qualified | Tighter targeting and lead scoring |
| 5. Sale | Slow follow-up or a weak sales process | Lead-to-customer rate | The 14-day follow-up schedule |
Not sure which stage is your problem? Answer four quick questions.
How To Get Leads: The 15 Best Strategies
Here they are. Free and paid, fast and slow, local and national. Most show you how to get leads online, but referrals, partnerships, events and calls still work offline.
You don’t need all 15. Read the “Best for” line on each, pick 2 or 3 that fit, and do them properly.
Not sure where to start? Use the free strategy finder below the list.
One honest note before we start. Costs and timings below are planning estimates from our experience, unless a source is linked. Your results depend on your market, offer, budget and how fast you follow up.
1Google Business Profile And Local SEO
When people search “plumber near me” or “dentist in Austin,” Google shows a map with three businesses first. Those businesses get the calls.
Your free Google Business Profile is how you get on that map, in the US, the UK, Nigeria and most countries. Reviews are a big part of how you get chosen.
It’s for businesses that have a location customers can visit, or travel to customers. Online-only businesses aren’t eligible.
In BrightLocal’s 2026 survey of US consumers, 97% read reviews for local businesses, and 68% will only use a business rated four stars or higher.
- Create or claim your profile, then verify it. Our guide on how to put your business on Google Maps walks you through every screen.
- Choose the most accurate primary category, and list every service you offer.
- Add real photos, correct hours and a booking or quote link.
- Ask every happy customer for a review, and reply to every review you get.
- Link your profile to a website page for each main service and area.
BrightLocal also found 47% of US consumers won’t use a business with fewer than 20 reviews. That’s not a Google ranking rule, but 20 genuine reviews is a smart first trust goal.
2SEO Content That Answers Buyer Questions
Every day, your future customers type their problems into Google. “How much does a new roof cost in Texas?” “Best payroll software for restaurants.”
If your website answers those questions well, you get found by people who are already looking. You don’t pay per click, though good SEO still takes ongoing work.
- List the 20 questions customers ask you most, plus your “cost,” “best,” “vs” and “near me” searches.
- Build a clear page for each main service and each area you serve.
- Write helpful articles that answer one question each, with a clear next step at the end.
- Add a pricing guide. People searching for prices are close to buying.
A bookkeeping firm writes “How much does a bookkeeper cost for a small business?” with real price ranges.
The page ends with one offer: “Get a fixed monthly quote within 24 hours.” The form records “SEO: pricing page” as the lead source, so the firm can see exactly which article brings paying clients.
Our content marketing services plan and write pages like this.
Search is changing too. BrightLocal found 45% of US consumers now use AI tools such as ChatGPT for local recommendations, and Gartner found 45% of B2B buyers used AI during a recent purchase.
Clear, expert content helps people and may help AI tools understand your business. Our SEO services, SEO writing services and AI SEO services help with all of this.
Write the “how much does it cost” page your competitors are scared to write. It often becomes one of your best lead pages.
3Google Search Ads
Google Ads can put you at the top of search results the same day. You pay when someone clicks.
The power is intent. Someone searching “emergency electrician Atlanta” wants help now.
According to WordStream’s 2026 benchmarks, based on 13,474 US campaigns, the average cost per lead was $66.69, with an 8.18% conversion rate.
Costs vary a lot by industry. The same report put home and home improvement at $90.92 per lead, real estate at $102.51, legal services at $131.63 and dentists at $72.97.
These are US averages, not targets. Costs in Lagos, London or Toronto can be much lower or higher. What matters is whether your cost per lead fits what a lead is worth to you.
- Start with a small list of high-intent keywords, such as “[service] near me,” “[service] cost” and “[service] company.”
- Send clicks to a matching landing page, not your homepage.
- Add call and lead form tracking before you spend a dollar.
- Check search terms weekly, and block irrelevant ones like “jobs” or “free.”
Using broad keywords with no tracking. You’ll pay for clicks from people looking for jobs, DIY tips or a different service. Our Google Ads services fix this from day one, as part of our wider paid advertising services.
4Google Local Services Ads
Local Services Ads sit at the very top of some Google searches. Instead of paying per click, you pay only for leads related to your business.
They’re available only in some countries and for certain service categories, such as plumbers, electricians, HVAC, roofers, lawyers, real estate services and dentists in the US. Check eligibility for your country before you plan around them.
Google says invalid or low-quality leads are not charged, and leads it later judges low quality can be credited automatically. Automatic credits aren’t available in EEA countries.
- Sign up and complete Google’s screening and verification. Approved businesses show a single “Google Verified” badge, which replaced the old Google Guaranteed and Google Screened badges in October 2025.
- Choose only the job types and areas you really want.
- Answer every call. Missed calls during business hours can still count as leads.
- Rate your leads in the dashboard, and get reviews flowing to improve your ranking.
Set your business hours to the hours you can truly answer the phone. That one setting protects your budget.
5Facebook And Instagram Lead Ads
Meta lead ads show a form inside Facebook or Instagram, already filled in with the person’s details. One or two taps and you have a lead.
That’s the strength and the weakness. It’s easy to submit, so you get more leads, but some are less serious. A cheap form fill is not the same as a qualified inquiry.
In markets where people live on WhatsApp, such as Nigeria, a Click to WhatsApp ad that opens a chat is often a better fit than a form.
- Lead with a strong, specific offer: a free quote, a home value report, a first-visit discount.
- Choose the “Higher intent” form type, which adds a review step before people submit.
- Add one or two qualifying questions, such as budget, timeline or ZIP or postcode.
- Connect the form to your CRM or a text alert, and call every lead within minutes.
Show real people and real results in your ad: your team, your work, a short customer video. Polished stock images often perform worse. Our Meta ads services test this for you, or learn to run them yourself in our Facebook ads course.
6LinkedIn Outreach And Lead Gen Forms
If you sell to businesses, LinkedIn is where the decision makers are.
In the Content Marketing Institute’s 2026 research of 1,015 B2B marketers, 76% rated LinkedIn their most effective channel for thought leadership.
- Rewrite your profile so it speaks to your ideal customer, not to recruiters.
- Post 2 or 3 times a week: lessons, results, opinions and short case studies.
- Connect with a steady number of ideal prospects each day, such as 10 to 20, with a short, personal note and no pitch.
- Start conversations by asking about their world, then offer something useful.
- For ads, use LinkedIn Lead Gen Forms, which come pre-filled with profile data.
Sending a sales pitch the second someone accepts your request. Build the relationship first. Our LinkedIn marketing services run this system for founders and sales teams.
7A Lead Magnet And Landing Page
A lead magnet is something useful you give away in exchange for contact details. A checklist, a calculator, a price guide, a quiz, a free audit.
Pair it with a focused landing page: one offer, one form, no menu. In Unbounce’s benchmark report of over 41,000 landing pages, the median conversion rate across all industries was 6.6%.
Quality beats volume here. A roofer’s “free iPad giveaway” pulls hundreds of sign-ups from people who’ll never buy a roof. A “roof age and replacement cost checklist” pulls fewer, but almost every one owns an older home.
- Pick a problem your buyer has before they’re ready to buy.
- Create the quickest useful fix: a 1-page checklist beats a 40-page ebook.
- Build a simple page with a clear headline, 3 benefits, proof and a short form.
- Send it with an email series that leads naturally to a call or quote.
Tools and quizzes often beat PDFs, because people get a personal answer. That’s why this guide has three free tools. Our sales funnel services build these end to end, and our sales funnel course teaches you how.
8Email And Text Follow-Up (And Your Old Leads)
The fastest way to get leads is often hiding in your inbox. Past customers, old quotes, people who went quiet.
Nielsen’s 2021 US Trust in Advertising study found recommendations from people we know and emails people signed up for are almost twice as likely to prompt action.
One rule first: only market to people who gave you permission or recently bought from you, and follow your country’s rules (see rules by country).
- Export every past customer, quote and inquiry into one list.
- Send a short, personal message: “We’re booking for next month. Do you still need help with [service]?”
- Start a monthly newsletter with one useful tip and one offer.
- Set up automatic follow-up for every new lead (see the follow-up schedule).
Only text people who gave you permission, and include a way to opt out. Our email marketing services handle the setup, the writing and the rules.
9A Referral And Review System
Referral leads trust you before you say a word. In Nielsen’s 2021 US study, 89% of people said recommendations from people they know are the channel they trust most.
Most businesses get referrals by accident. The best ones ask on purpose, at the right moment.
- Ask right after a win: a finished project, a great result, a five-star review.
- Make it easy. Write the introduction message for them.
- Thank every referrer within 24 hours, and tell them how it went.
- Reward referrals where your industry’s rules allow it.
“[Name], I’m really glad [result] worked out. Most of our new clients come from people like you, so I wanted to ask: who else do you know who’s dealing with [specific problem] right now?
If someone comes to mind, would you be comfortable sending a quick text introducing us? I can write a two-line note you can forward, so it takes you 30 seconds.”
Reviews work the same way, and our reputation management services can build a steady review flow for you.
10Partnerships With Businesses That Share Your Buyers
Some businesses meet your customers right before they need you. Partner with them.
- A mortgage lender meets home buyers before the real estate agent does.
- An accountant hears “we need new software” before the IT firm does.
- A wedding venue meets couples before the photographer does.
- A roofer meets homeowners who also need gutters, solar and insurance claims help.
- List 10 businesses that serve your customer before or after you.
- Offer something first: a referral, a co-hosted workshop, a joint offer.
- Agree on a simple way to pass leads, and follow up fast on every one.
Track partner referrals in your CRM. The partner who sends three good leads a quarter deserves a thank-you lunch and your referrals back.
11Cold Email To A Tight List
Cold email still works in the US when it’s short, relevant and sent to the right people.
It fails when it’s spam. Gartner found 73% of B2B buyers actively avoid suppliers who send irrelevant outreach.
Having someone’s email address doesn’t mean you can market to them. US law allows commercial email with a clear opt-out, but the UK, EU and Canada have different rules, especially for emailing individuals, so check the rules for your country first.
- Build a small list of companies that fit your ideal customer, and find the right person at each.
- Send from a separate domain that’s set up with SPF, DKIM and DMARC.
- Write under 100 words, mention a real reason you’re reaching out, and make one small ask.
- Follow up 2 to 4 times, then stop.
- In the US, include your physical address and an easy opt-out, as CAN-SPAM requires. Other countries have their own rules.
Subject: Quick question about [specific trigger]
Hi [First name], I saw [Company] is [trigger: hiring three new sales reps / opening a second location].
When [similar company] did the same, they ran into [specific problem]. We helped them [result with a number] in [timeframe].
Would it help if I sent over the 3 things they changed? No call needed unless you want one.
[Your name], [Title], [Company] · [Phone] · [Physical mailing address]
Not the right person? Just reply and let me know. If you’d rather not hear from me, reply “no thanks” and I won’t email again.
12Cold Calling And Warm Calling
The phone is still the fastest way to start a real conversation. It’s just harder than it used to be.
Warm calls work better than cold ones. Call people who downloaded something, visited your pricing page, attended your event, or were referred to you.
- Prepare a 30-second opener: who you are, why you’re calling them, and one question.
- Call in short, focused blocks, at times your buyers usually pick up.
- Leave a short voicemail, then send a matching email or text if you have permission.
- For consumer numbers, check the Do Not Call Registry and the TCPA rules first, or your own country’s do-not-call rules.
- Stop the moment someone says no, and note it in your CRM.
“Hi [Name], this is [You] from [Company]. I’ll be quick. We help [type of business] in [area] with [result]. I’m calling because [specific reason]. Is [problem] something you’re dealing with right now, or is it handled?”
13Webinars, Events And Networking
People buy from people they’ve seen, heard and met. Events speed that up.
In CMI’s 2026 research, 52% of B2B marketers named speaking events and webinars among their most effective channels for thought leadership.
- Host a 30-minute webinar or workshop that solves one problem, with a clear offer at the end.
- Join one local group and show up every time: your chamber of commerce, a BNI chapter or an industry association.
- Speak on a panel or a podcast your buyers listen to.
- Follow up with every attendee within 24 hours.
At trade shows, book meetings before the show. Walk-up traffic alone rarely pays for the booth.
14Short Videos And Social Content
Short videos on Instagram Reels, TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Facebook let strangers get to know you before they ever call.
The trick is to post with a purpose. Every video should either teach, prove or invite.
- Answer one customer question per video, in under 60 seconds.
- Show the work: before and after, behind the scenes, a happy customer.
- End with one clear next step: “Comment PRICE and I’ll send our price list” or “Book through the link in my profile.”
- Reply to every comment and message fast. That’s where social leads are won.
Turn your best organic video into an ad. Proven content makes cheaper ads. Our video marketing services and social media marketing services can run this for you.
15Directories And Review Sites
Many buyers start on a directory, not Google. Be there, and look good when they find you.
- Everyone: Apple Business Connect, Bing Places and your chamber of commerce.
- US and Canada: Yelp and the Better Business Bureau.
- Home services: Angi, Thumbtack, Houzz, Nextdoor.
- B2B and agencies: Clutch, G2, Capterra, Thomasnet.
- Legal and health: Avvo, Justia, FindLaw, Zocdoc, Healthgrades.
- Outside the US: Trustpilot, Checkatrade and Yell in the UK, HomeStars in Canada, and Jiji and your industry associations in Nigeria.
- Claim the free listings first, and fill in every field.
- Keep your business name, address and phone number the same everywhere.
- Ask happy clients for reviews on the one or two sites your buyers use most.
- Test paid upgrades for 90 days, and keep them only if the numbers work.
Paying for a premium listing on a site your buyers never visit. Ask new customers where they looked before they found you.

How To Get Leads In Real Estate
If you’re an agent asking how to get leads in real estate, start with the people who already know you.
In the National Association of REALTORS® 2025 Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers, 43% of buyers were referred to their agent by a friend, neighbor or relative, and another 15% used an agent they had worked with before.
Sellers lean on trust even more. About 66% found their agent through a referral or by going back to an agent they had used before.
But buyers also start online. The same report found 46% of buyers began by looking at homes on the internet, and 88% of buyers used an agent.
So the answer has two parts: a referral engine for people who know you, and an online presence that catches buyers before they pick an agent.
How do you get leads in real estate when the market is crowded? Run these six plays.
Put every past client, friend and contact into a CRM. Send a useful monthly market update, call 10 people a week, and remember home anniversaries. This is the cheapest lead source you will ever have.
A landing page that asks for an address and sends a value estimate plus a 90-day market report. Follow with a 2-minute personal video within 5 minutes and a call within the hour.
Neighborhood guides, YouTube market updates and a strong Google Business Profile for the areas you farm. Sellers hire the agent who clearly knows their street.
Use a digital sign-in, ask one question (“Are you also selling?”), and text every visitor the same day with similar listings.
Zillow Premier Agent, Realtor.com and Homes.com leads can work, but only with a 5-minute response and a 6- to 12-month nurture, because many buyers are months away.
Mortgage lenders, builders, divorce and estate attorneys, and relocation managers all meet your future clients before you do.
How do you generate leads in real estate as a new agent?
No past clients yet? Borrow attention.
- Host open houses for busy agents in your office.
- Pick one neighborhood of 300 to 500 homes and show up there every month, online and on doorsteps.
- Call For Sale By Owner and expired listings, after checking the National Do Not Call Registry.
- Post short, helpful videos about local homes, prices and first-time buyer steps.
Paying for leads, then replying hours later. The agent who calls first often gets the appointment. Set up instant text replies and call every new lead within 5 minutes.
Our real estate marketing services set up the home value funnel, ads and follow-up for agents and brokerages.
How To Generate Leads In Sales (And How To Get Sales Leads)
If you sell to other businesses, the rules change.
In a 2026 Gartner survey of 646 B2B buyers, 67% said they prefer a rep-free buying experience. They research on their own first.
And in Gartner’s 2025 survey, 73% of B2B buyers said they actively avoid suppliers who send irrelevant outreach.
That means two jobs. Be easy to find and trust when they research, and reach the right accounts before your competitors do.
So how do you generate leads in sales, step by step?
- Write your ideal customer profile (ICP). Industry, company size, location, the tools they use and the job title that feels the pain.
- Build a tight account list. 100 to 300 companies that fit, not 10,000 random contacts. Tools like LinkedIn Sales Navigator, Apollo and ZoomInfo help.
- Watch for trigger events. New funding, a new executive, a hiring spree, a new location, a bad review or a switch in tools. A trigger gives you a reason to reach out now.
- Use buyer intent signals. G2 Buyer Intent shows companies viewing your category or competitors, and Sales Navigator’s Advanced plan flags accounts showing interest.
- Run a multi-channel sequence. Email, phone and LinkedIn together, over two to three weeks (see the follow-up schedule).
- Reach more than one person. Most business purchases involve a group. Talk to the user, the manager and the person who signs.
- Ask for introductions after every win. A happy customer’s introduction beats any cold message.
How do you get sales leads fast, if you need meetings this month? Combine a trigger-based cold email with a phone call the same day, and ask current customers for two introductions each.
When a target company posts three or more jobs for a role your product supports, send a 3-line email that mentions the hiring push and offers a 15-minute walkthrough of how two similar companies handled it.
It is relevant, timely and easy to say yes to. That is what gets replies.
Our B2B marketing services and LinkedIn marketing services build these sales lead systems for B2B teams.
How To Generate Leads For IT Sales
IT is a trust sale. Nobody hands their network, data or software stack to a stranger after one cold call.
Here is how to generate leads for IT sales, whether you run a managed service provider (MSP), an IT consultancy or a software company.
Many small businesses must answer security questions when they renew cyber insurance: multi-factor login, backups, endpoint protection, staff training.
Build a 10-question scorecard on those topics. Each result page offers a 20-minute review call. It solves a problem they already have this month.
Two more tips. Sell outcomes such as uptime, passing an insurance review or meeting compliance, not features like “24/7 monitoring.”
And reach the owner or finance lead as well as the IT contact, because they usually sign.
Our tech marketing services run this playbook for MSPs, SaaS and IT firms.
How To Get Leads For 11 More Types Of Business
The 15 strategies work everywhere, but every industry has its own shortcuts. Jump to yours.
How to get leads for agency businesses
Agencies that say “we do everything for everyone” struggle to get referrals. Pick a niche and a result, then prove it.
- Case studies with numbers for one industry, on your site and LinkedIn.
- Review directories such as Clutch, which says 94% of buyers use online reviews when making B2B purchase decisions.
- Partner programs from HubSpot, Shopify and Klaviyo, plus white-label work for bigger agencies.
- Marketplaces such as Upwork to land first clients in a new niche.
Record a 3-minute video audit of a prospect’s website or ads with three specific fixes. Send it with no pitch, then offer the full audit on a call.
How to get leads for construction companies
Commercial contractors win on bids and relationships. Residential contractors win on trust and visibility.
- Bid platforms: BuildingConnected, ConstructConnect, Dodge and PlanHub, plus public work on SAM.gov and state portals. On BuildingConnected, the work you list and your service area decide which bid invites you receive.
- Relationships with architects, engineers, developers and property managers, who bring repeat work.
- Residential: Google Local Services Ads, a project photo gallery on your site, and Houzz.
- Jobsite signs and yard signs on every project.
On every active home job, leave a door hanger at the 20 nearest homes with a project photo and an offer of a free estimate “while our crew is on your street.”
How to get leads for home services
Plumbers, HVAC, roofers, electricians, cleaners and landscapers live and die by local search and speed.
- Google Local Services Ads and a fully built Google Business Profile, covered in strategy 1 and strategy 4.
- Review volume and freshness. Ask every customer the day the job is done.
- Maintenance plans and seasonal reminders to past customers, such as AC tune-ups before summer.
- Marketplaces such as Angi, Thumbtack, Yelp and Nextdoor, used carefully (see how they charge).
Any call you miss triggers an instant text: “Sorry we missed you, this is Mike at ABC Plumbing. What’s going on? We can usually be there today.” It rescues leads you already paid for.
We cover this in depth in our local SEO services.
How to get leads for insurance agents
- Your current book first. Offer home to auto clients, umbrella to homeowners, and life to new parents.
- Referral partners: real estate agents and mortgage lenders need a homeowners policy before every closing.
- Life-event content: new drivers, new homeowners, new businesses.
- Bought leads, but only when you understand the type and the consent behind them (see buying leads).
Promise partner realtors and lenders a homeowners quote within 4 business hours, so their deals never stall waiting on insurance.
Insurance agents, financial advisors and law firms all sell trust. Our professional services marketing is built for firms like these.
How to get leads for financial advisors
- Centers of influence: CPAs, estate attorneys and divorce attorneys meet your ideal clients at money moments.
- A clear niche, such as physicians, tech employees with stock options, or pre-retirees from one large employer.
- Educational workshops and webinars with a one-page plan review as the next step.
- Matching platforms such as SmartAsset and Zoe Financial, which send pre-screened prospects for a fee.
In the US, client testimonials and ratings are regulated under the SEC Marketing Rule. Check with compliance before you post reviews or run ads. Advisors elsewhere should check their own regulator.
How to get leads for law firms
- Google Local Services Ads with the Google Verified badge, plus reviews.
- Legal directories: Avvo, Justia, FindLaw and Super Lawyers. Martindale-Avvo’s pay-per-lead charges only for inquiries that ask for more information.
- Practice-area content that answers specific questions, like “what happens at a first DUI hearing in Maricopa County.”
- Referral networks with other attorneys, CPAs and past clients.
Answer every call, day and night, with live intake or chat and a 3-minute callback promise. Injury and criminal defense callers often call the next firm.
Remember that ABA Model Rule 7.3 (see the ABA guidance on live solicitation) and your state’s version restrict live, person-to-person solicitation, so most law firm leads should be inbound. Lawyers outside the US should check their own bar or law society rules.
How to get leads for dental and healthcare practices
- Google Business Profile with an online booking link and steady reviews.
- Booking platforms such as Zocdoc, which charges per new-patient booking with no monthly fee.
- Insurance network listings, because many patients search by plan.
- Recall campaigns for patients who haven’t visited in 12 months or more.
Hold four new-patient slots every week and advertise “seen this week.” Fast access is the offer.
Ad tracking pixels on booking or condition pages can expose patient information. In the US, read the HHS guidance on online tracking (a court vacated part of it in 2024) and talk to your compliance advisor before you add them.
Our healthcare marketing services are built around these rules.
How to get leads for coaches and consultants
- LinkedIn content and direct messages to a narrow niche.
- Podcast guesting and speaking, to borrow audiences that already trust the host.
- Workshops and webinars that teach one thing well.
- A small paid starter offer that filters out people who were never going to buy.
Build a 10-question scorecard quiz, such as “How ready is your sales team to scale?” The score gives a personal result, a booking link and a qualification signal all at once.
How to get leads for manufacturers and wholesalers
- Sourcing directories: Thomasnet, GlobalSpec and IQS Directory, where engineers send requests for quotes.
- Spec-rich website pages with materials, tolerances, CAD files and data sheets that engineers search for.
- Trade shows with meetings booked before the show, not just a booth.
- Distributors, sales reps and wholesale marketplaces such as Faire.
Put your CAD and spec library behind a short form (name, company, project), and have an engineer follow up within one business day.
How to get leads for e-commerce stores
For online stores, a lead is an email or SMS subscriber.
- Sign-up forms with a reason to join. Klaviyo puts its benchmark sign-up form submit rate at about 3%, with stronger forms doing much better.
- Product quizzes that recommend the right item and capture an email.
- SMS sign-ups with clear consent wording.
- A welcome email series that turns new subscribers into first orders.
Step one asks a simple question: “Shopping for yourself or a gift?” Step two asks for the email. People who answer the first question are more likely to finish.
Our e-commerce marketing services and email marketing services build this for online brands.
How to get leads for restaurants and catering
- Catering and event leads from office managers, event planners and hotel concierges.
- Booking and event platforms such as ezCater, OpenTable, Resy, Tripleseat and Peerspace.
- A Google Business Profile with “Catering” and “Private events” links and an up-to-date menu.
- Fast proposals. Event planners often ask several venues at once, and the first clear answer with dates and prices often wins.
Drop a free sample tray at 10 nearby offices with 50 or more staff, addressed to the office manager, with a first-order code and a direct catering line.
Our hospitality marketing services help restaurants, hotels and venues fill more tables and events.
How To Get Leads Outside The US: Nigeria, Africa, UK, Canada And Beyond
The 5-part lead system works in every country. What changes is the platforms people use, what leads cost and the rules you must follow.
Here’s how to get leads in the markets we work in most.
How to get leads in Nigeria and other African markets
In Nigeria, the sale usually happens in a chat, not on a form.
The KPMG and Orange Group Nigeria Smartphone Study 2025 surveyed 13,251 people in 12 cities and found WhatsApp installed on 95% of their smartphones. And DataReportal counted 109 million internet users in Nigeria at the end of 2025.
- Make WhatsApp your front door. Add a WhatsApp button to your website, Google Business Profile, Instagram bio and ads, with a pre-filled message.
- Build for phones first. Fast pages, big buttons and short forms, because many of your buyers are on mobile data.
- Show trust early. Real photos, your CAC registration, a physical address, reviews and short video testimonials. Buyers worry about scams, so proof wins.
- Budget in naira, judge by customers. Don’t compare your cost per lead to US averages. Use the calculator to set a target that fits your margins.
- Get on Google Maps. It’s free, and it puts you in front of people searching nearby. Our guide on how to put your business on Google Maps shows you how.
Every African market is different, so test before you scale. Our digital marketing statistics for Nigeria and WhatsApp marketing services go deeper.
How to get leads in the UK and Europe
- Reviews carry weight. Trustpilot, Google reviews and trade sites like Checkatrade often decide who gets the call.
- Email rules are stricter for individuals. In the UK, you need specific consent to email or text individuals, with a limited “soft opt-in” for your own customers. Emailing companies is allowed, but sole traders count as individuals.
- LinkedIn and partnerships do the heavy lifting for B2B.
How to get leads in Canada
- Get consent before you email. Canada’s anti-spam law requires consent, clear identification and an unsubscribe option in commercial messages.
- Local search works the same way as in the US: Google Business Profile, reviews and directories such as HomeStars.
How to get leads across borders
Selling remote services or B2B to other countries? Trust has to travel further.
- Show case studies from the buyer’s own market.
- Be clear on price, time zones, contracts and how payment works.
- Offer a low-risk first step, like a paid audit or a small pilot project.
- Book calls in their time zone, not yours.
Our diaspora marketing services help businesses sell between Africa, the UK, the US and Canada.
Should You Buy Leads? How Lead Platforms Actually Charge
Buying leads can work. It can also drain your budget fast.
The difference is understanding exactly what you pay for. Here is how the main US platforms charge, based on their own pages and published reviews in 2026.
| Platform | Best for | How you pay | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Local Services Ads | Home services, law, some professional services | Per valid lead, not per click. Invalid leads can be credited | Missed calls during business hours can still be charged |
| Angi | Home services | Per lead, often shared, typically about $15 to $85 each, per Housecall Pro | You pay even if the customer hires someone else |
| Thumbtack | Home and local services | When a customer is matched with you or you contact them, not when you win | Set weekly budget caps |
| Zillow Premier Agent | Real estate agents | Advertising in chosen ZIP codes, paid up front | Leads need fast replies and long nurturing |
| Zillow Preferred (formerly Flex) | Real estate teams | A share of your commission when a deal closes, invite-only | Strict response and conversion standards |
| Martindale-Avvo | Law firms | Per inquiry that asks for more information | Choose practice areas and locations carefully |
| Zocdoc | Doctors and dentists | Per new-patient booking, no monthly fee | Existing patients are not charged, so track new ones |
| Houzz Pro | Remodelers, designers | Monthly subscription, listed by Capterra at $399 a month | Lead volume is not guaranteed |
| Clutch | Agencies, IT firms | Monthly sponsorship, 12-month first commitment | Rankings depend heavily on verified reviews |
| Thomasnet | Manufacturers | Free listing, or a paid advertising program | Free listings rank below paid ones |
Insurance agents face another choice: lead type. Vendors publish typical ranges of about $2 to $10 for aged leads, $15 to $30 for shared leads, $25 to $75 for exclusive leads and $30 to $100 for live transfers.
Shared leads go to several agents at once, so the fastest caller often wins.
Three rules if you buy leads:
- Prefer exclusive leads, or be the fastest responder on shared ones.
- Ask how consent was collected before you call or text anyone, and keep a record.
- Never buy email lists. They damage your sender reputation and break most email platforms’ rules.
The long-term goal is simple. Use bought leads as a bridge while you build your own lead sources, which usually get cheaper over time.
Speed To Lead: The 5-Minute Rule
This is the cheapest upgrade in this whole guide, and most businesses ignore it.
A Harvard Business Review study audited 2,241 US companies. Firms that tried to contact a lead within an hour were nearly seven times as likely to qualify it as firms that waited even one hour longer.
Compared with firms that waited 24 hours or more, they were over 60 times as likely to qualify the lead.
Yet 23% of the companies never replied at all, and the average reply took 42 hours.
That study is from 2011, but the problem hasn’t gone away. In Clio’s 2024 secret-shopper study of 500 law firms, only 33% replied to email, and 48% could not be reached by phone.
Leads go cold fast. The longer you wait, the more likely they’ve already called your competitor.
Here is how to reply in minutes, even when you’re busy:
Our marketing automation services set up instant replies and lead alerts, and our WhatsApp marketing services add chat follow-up where your customers prefer it.
The Follow-Up Schedule That Turns Leads Into Sales
Getting the lead is half the job. Most leads won’t buy on the first contact, and many need several touches before they even reply.
Use this schedule for every new lead. Inbound leads start with a call. Outbound leads start with an email.
| When | Channel | What to send |
|---|---|---|
| Day 0 (within 5 minutes for inbound) | Call, then text or email | Call right away. No answer? Text: “Hi [Name], it’s [You] from [Company]. Got your request about [topic]. Is now good for a quick call, or is later today better?” |
| Day 1 | Call, voicemail, LinkedIn | Leave a 20-second voicemail: “Hi [Name], [You] from [Company], following up on [topic]. I’ll send a short note by email. My number is [number].” Connect on LinkedIn with no pitch if it’s a business lead. |
| Day 3 | Email, same thread | Add value: a short case study, a checklist or the answer to a common question. “Thought this might help while you’re looking at [topic].” |
| Day 7 | Call and email | Try a new angle or proof point, then ask a simple question: “Is [problem] still a priority this quarter?” |
| Day 14 | Final email | “I haven’t heard back, so I’ll assume the timing isn’t right. If anything changes, just reply here and I’ll pick it up.” Then move them to a monthly newsletter, if they’ve agreed to hear from you. |

Stop at once if anyone replies STOP, unsubscribes or says “no thanks,” and record it in your CRM.
Leads that go quiet aren’t lost. A monthly email and a fresh reason to reconnect, like a new offer or a change in their business, bring many of them back.
How To Qualify Leads (So You Stop Chasing The Wrong Ones)
Knowing how to get leads matters. Knowing which leads to drop matters just as much.
Ask four BANT questions on your first call:
Then score each lead out of 100.
| Signal | Points |
|---|---|
| Fits your ideal customer (industry, size, location) | 0 to 20 |
| Has a clear, urgent problem you solve | 0 to 20 |
| Budget confirmed, or realistic for your prices | 0 to 20 |
| You’re talking to the decision maker | 0 to 15 |
| Wants to start within 90 days | 0 to 15 |
| Took a high-intent action (called, asked for a quote, was referred) | 0 to 10 |
What Is A Lead Worth? Free Lead Goal Calculator
Most owners guess. Work it out instead, in your own currency.
Enter your monthly sales goal, your average sale and how many leads you usually close. The calculator shows how many leads you need, the most you can spend on each one, and your break-even cost per lead.
Here’s an example. A $30,000 goal with $2,500 jobs needs 12 new customers. At a 20% close rate, that’s 60 leads a month.
With a $3,000 budget, each lead can cost up to $50. Improve your close rate to 30%, and you only need 40 leads.
Now the part that changes how you see “expensive” leads. Here’s an illustrative example of two channels for the same business:
Channel B costs three times as much per lead, yet each customer costs half as much. That’s why the smartest way to get leads is to judge every channel by cost per customer and profit, not cost per lead.
How To Track Your Lead Generation
If you don’t track it, you can’t fix it. These six numbers tell you what’s working.
| Metric | What it means | How to work it out |
|---|---|---|
| Cost per lead (CPL) | What one lead costs you | Money spent ÷ number of leads |
| Lead-to-customer rate | How many leads buy | New customers ÷ leads × 100 |
| Cost per customer (CAC) | What one new customer costs | Money spent ÷ new customers |
| Speed to lead | How fast you reply | Time from lead in to first contact |
| Revenue per lead | What each lead is worth | Sales from a source ÷ leads from that source |
| Lead source | Where each lead came from | Tracking links, call tracking and asking “How did you hear about us?” |
Set up three things and you’ll know your real numbers:
- Tracking links (UTMs) on every ad, email and social post, built with Google’s free Campaign URL Builder.
- A separate tracking phone number for each major channel, so calls are counted too.
- A “lead source” field in your CRM that’s filled in for every lead, every time.
Then judge each strategy by cost per customer, not cost per lead. Cheap leads that never buy are the most expensive leads you’ll ever get.
Our analytics and tracking services set this up end to end, and our conversion rate optimization services turn more of those leads into customers.
Lead Generation Rules By Country: US, UK, EU, Canada And Nigeria
Learning how to get leads the wrong way can cost far more than it earns.
Rules depend on the country, who you contact, the channel and the data you collect. Start with the rules where your buyers live, not just where your business is.
United States
Use honest sender details and subject lines, include your physical address and an easy way to opt out, and honor opt-outs within 10 business days. The FTC says the law makes no exception for business-to-business email, and each breach can cost up to $53,088.
If you send a lot of email, set up SPF, DKIM and DMARC, offer one-click unsubscribe, and keep spam complaints low. Google’s sender guidelines ask senders to keep their spam rate below 0.1%, and never let it reach 0.3%.
Marketing calls or texts to mobile phones using an autodialer or a recorded voice need the person’s prior express written consent. Don’t call homes before 8 a.m. or after 9 p.m. their time, and honor opt-outs made in any reasonable way within 10 business days.
If you call consumers, check your list against the National Do Not Call Registry at least every 31 days. Most calls to businesses are exempt, but the FTC’s rules list exceptions, and violations can cost up to $53,088 each.
Never buy, fake or filter reviews. The FTC’s rule on consumer reviews and testimonials bans fake reviews, and bans paying for reviews that must be positive or negative.
Lawyers, financial advisors, healthcare providers, insurance agents and real estate agents all have extra marketing rules. Check yours before you launch a campaign.
US state laws can add stricter rules on calls, texts and data.
Outside the United States
On WhatsApp anywhere in the world, the WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy says you may only message people who gave you their number and opted in to hear from you.
Rules change often. This section is general information, not legal advice, so check with a lawyer in your country for your situation.

Questions About How To Get Leads
Pick one ideal customer, make a clear offer, and show up where that customer already looks, such as Google, Google Maps, Facebook or LinkedIn.
Capture their details with a simple form or call button, reply within minutes, and follow up several times. Start with 2 or 3 strategies that fit your business and track what each lead costs.
The best free ways to get leads are a complete Google Business Profile, asking happy customers for referrals and reviews, contacting past customers and old leads, LinkedIn outreach, partnerships, and helpful SEO content.
They cost time instead of money, and they often bring the highest-quality leads.
Contact your past customers and old leads today, then turn on Google Search Ads or Google Local Services Ads, which can bring leads within days.
Whatever you choose, reply to every new lead within minutes, because speed decides how many leads turn into sales.
Most real estate leads come from people who know you. In the 2025 NAR Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers, 43% of buyers were referred to their agent, and 66% of sellers used a referred agent or one they had used before.
Work your sphere every month, offer a home value report, own one neighborhood online, turn open houses into lead capture, and reply to every portal lead within 5 minutes.
Borrow attention until you have past clients. Host open houses for other agents, farm one neighborhood of 300 to 500 homes, post short local videos, and call For Sale By Owner and expired listings after checking the Do Not Call Registry.
Partner with mortgage lenders and builders, who meet buyers before agents do.
Define your ideal customer, build a tight list of 100 to 300 accounts, watch for trigger events like funding or hiring, and reach out by email, phone and LinkedIn over two to three weeks.
Talk to more than one person at each company, and ask every happy customer for introductions.
Combine a short, trigger-based cold email with a phone call the same day, contact past customers about new needs, and ask current clients for two introductions each.
For inbound leads, Google Search Ads and LinkedIn Lead Gen Forms can start working within days.
Lead with a free assessment, such as a security audit or cyber insurance readiness check, partner with accountants, law firms and insurance brokers, and rank for searches like “managed IT services near me.”
Sell business outcomes, not features, and reach the owner or finance lead as well as the IT contact.
It depends on your industry, channel and offer. WordStream’s 2026 benchmarks put the average Google Ads cost per lead at $66.69 across US industries, with legal services at $131.63 and real estate at $102.51.
Referrals and SEO can cost far less per lead over time. Judge every channel by cost per customer, not just cost per lead.
It can be, if you reply within minutes, prefer exclusive leads and know how consent was collected. Shared leads go to several businesses at once, so the fastest caller often wins.
Never buy email lists. Use bought leads as a bridge while you build your own lead sources.
Divide your monthly sales goal by your average sale to get the customers you need, then divide by your close rate.
For example, a $30,000 goal with $2,500 sales and a 20% close rate needs 60 leads a month. The free calculator in this guide does the math for you.
A quality lead fits your ideal customer, has a real need you solve, can afford your price, and wants to act soon.
Score every lead out of 100 on fit, need, budget, authority, timeline and intent, and focus your time on leads that score 70 or more.
Within 5 minutes if you can, and always within the hour. A Harvard Business Review study of 2,241 US companies found firms that tried to contact leads within an hour were nearly seven times as likely to qualify them as firms that waited an hour longer.
Use instant auto-replies and alerts so no lead waits.
Only with care. In the US, marketing calls or texts to mobile phones using an autodialer or recorded voice need prior express written consent under the TCPA, consumer numbers must be checked against the Do Not Call Registry, and opt-outs must be honored within 10 business days.
Other countries have their own rules, such as consent for marketing texts to individuals in the UK. Ask the seller exactly how consent was collected, and get legal advice for your situation.
Make WhatsApp your front door, get your business on Google Maps, build mobile-first pages, and show trust early with real photos, reviews and your CAC registration.
Then use Facebook and Instagram ads that open a WhatsApp chat, ask happy customers for referrals, and judge every channel by what each new customer costs in naira.
No. The US uses CAN-SPAM, the TCPA and the Do Not Call Registry, the UK requires consent to email or text individuals, Canada requires consent under its anti-spam law, and Nigeria and the EU give people the right to object to direct marketing.
Follow the rules where your buyers live, and get local legal advice before running email, text or calling campaigns.
Paid ads, cold outreach and contacting old leads can bring leads within days. Referrals and partnerships usually take a few weeks, and SEO and social content usually take 3 to 6 months.
Most businesses do best with a mix: one fast channel and one long-term channel.
Yes. A lead generation agency can build your offer, landing pages, ads and follow-up, and report your leads, cost per lead and sales every week.
Greenlearners Technologies offers this as a done-for-you lead generation service. Whoever you hire, make sure you own your ad accounts, data and lead lists.
